[snip] The latest code in Connector/J tries much harder not to hide underlying exceptions, you might try a snapshot from http://mmmysql.sourceforge.net/snapshots/stable/ to see if it works for you (it won't fix the server going-away problem, however). If you don't have a chance to file this at bugs.mysql.com later today, I'll file it first thing in the morning.
