Yes.

True.

We had to delay the development of the WB in respect to the MySQL
Administrator & MySQL Query Browser, the new Windows server installer /
config wizards, the Migration Toolkit and several other projects.

But in February this year we started to work on the WB.

Actually, I had the honor of speaking at Monty and David's keynote
myself. I showed off the MySQL Migration Toolkit and at the end of my
demo I also launched a pre-alpha version of the Workbench.

No, the Bitkeeper repository is not used anymore. The MySQL GUI team has
switched to Subversion completely.

Some basic facts about the WB:

The MySQL Workbench builds on the UI of DBDesigner4 - I tried to make
the design even more clear but in line with MA & QB. The WB will feature
a high performance OpenGL canvas. Further it makes use of a new Runtime
Environment (GRT) that is also powering the MySQL Migration Toolkit.
With the GRT it is possible to write modules and plugins in C, Java,
PHP, Lua (Mono, Python, Perl, more to follow). That makes the WB a very
open and flexible system and we hope for a number of plugins written by
the community. Like for all other MySQL GUI tools native versions will
be available for Windows, Linux and OS X. The WB will be dual licensed
GPL / Commercial.

As a teaser, I have uploaded the About screen that shows the WB icon ;)

More to follow in the next weeks.
