International access to Oracle databases

Does anybody have any advise or experience of accessing Oracle Databases over a Wide Area Network? Our Worry list currently contains the following items: 1. The ability to restrict Access through our firewall to certain databases 2. Performance of SQL*Net / Net*8 over a WAN consisting of Frame-Relay and VPN (between 128Mb to 2Gb) - Does Oracle use a "chatty" protocol? 3. The security of the data being transmitted. I would love to hear from others who have overcome these issues.
