I think we all know it's not important, but it sure is nice to have columns in a meaningful order.  So why not put them where you want them?

One  more thing to consider - regular oracle does block level IO so generally you get the whole row hence column order not important. Exadata is different and only the columns asked for come back - so again column order not an issue ....

Is there any special reason why the order of the columns is important? Because according to relational theory - this does not matter. And while it used to matter in pre-8i days, the order does not really make much difference anymore - except maybe if you fall into one or two very rare scenarios ....

So why???

I would like to avoid dropping the table and recreating if possible.
