ACK!  Sorry for appearing clueless... I knew that.... its the function 
that's filling in the details of the item - file times, but also 
permissions, uid, gid, etc. so I thought I was close.

The real mystery is why I don't see any change in the filer's 
behaviour even if I hack it to return null (display.c/details).  I was 
suspecting something was stale, or the cache was filling in for me, 
but neither of those theories bore out.

Since the curiosity is killing me, can I make that my follow-up question?

ACK!  That was easy.  Worked!  ROX-Filer, now with less screen clutter!

Many thanks for the help and for the indispensable ROX-Filer.  I've 
used it daily as my sole file manager for 3+ years now...
