What you can do with xrandr has also changed: it's now used to control
multihead layouts too, rather than just switching resolution/rotation
on a single head. You can now do things like:

xrandr \
       --dpi 96 \
       --output DVI-0 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 0x0 \
       --output VGA-0 --mode 1024x768 --right-of DVI-0

The downside is that a graphical frontend now needs to know about this
in order to avoid clobbering an existing multihead layout -- XFCE's
session manager doesn't, for example, which caused me problems.

(I preferred the old Xinerama settings, personally...)
