You just need to keep Nautilus available (but hidden) to unmount stuff, since ROX-Filer doesn't do that. What I have is a ROX-Filer based desktop, light on RAM, and with all the power of the settings of my distrib working correctly (as well as the mount integration, Places menu calling ROX, etc...). And you can not use the whole gnome without nautilus, for example, you can't use network support, samba, sshfs, ftp...integrated in gnome without nautilus neither mount devices with gnome-mount. To say that you have gnome-desktop+rox is like to say that you have a rox-desktop with nautilus. Later you can choose the window manager you like: metacity, flwm, icewm, lxp-icewm, oroborox, fluxbox...
