In practice I just put the /media directory on my ROX 'icon bar' and access
things like USB sticks that way. Although I guess my approach may be
unusual as I run xfce and ROX in parallel with an xfce panel at the top of
the screen as well as ROX's panel at the bottom. Then use ROX and ROX apps
for most purposes.

[Currently using xfce mint. Before that Xubuntu.]
