Oh, but you are right about the usability. It is usually better to reduce
confusion as much as possible. Perhaps the volume control /should/ be unique 
and have support for multiple sound cards. 

The trick is to find the right balance between flexibility and ease of use (I
know those are not necessarilly oposites, but you'll get the point...).
