The daemon process and the chkpass.pl processes will not launch each
other, or even be launched by the same parent program.

Having the chkpass.pl process send data to the daemon process via a
named pipe and the daemon process responding with a signal seemed the
simplest way to handle the communication.

Since you belive that filesystem sockets would be simpler, could you
give a little more detail? My Perl skills are somewhat limited - some
basic sample code would be useful.
