Having the chkpass.pl process send data to the daemon process via a named pipe and the daemon process responding with a signal seemed the simplest way to handle the communication. Since you belive that filesystem sockets would be simpler, could you give a little more detail? My Perl skills are somewhat limited - some basic sample code would be useful.
