That seems to be the answer.  Setting authentication in the Mac mail app
to, "none" allowed the mail to be sent.

You mentioned that you use a Mac also for mail reading.  Is that the way
you have yours set?

Does qmail-smtpd have an option for using ssl for negotiating with mail
clients?  Both Netscape and Mac mail readers have that option in their
config.
