Exactly what software are you referring to?  djb publishes a package called
"checkpassword".  There is also an API of that name; "checkpwd" might be a
program by somebody else that implements that API, or it might be something
else.  We don't know and can't tell without you giving us more information.

Show us (don't tell us) exactly what you did to test it -- i.e. exact copy &
paste of the command(s) you entered, and all output generated thereby.  I
