Seems like  the place where you  got your qmail-smtpd to  take arguments
would be a more likely place to find out why.

qmail-smtpd does  not have any documented  arguments that I can  see, so
what is  the behavior of  this interface  when the program  that follows
qmail-smtpd starts outputting stuff?

I assume  you mean that  you turn on  logging in chkpassldap.pl?  If so,
where is it sending it's logged output? Does qmail-smtpd know what to do
with it when it sees it?
