D'oh - you're right on all counts.  I statically checked tcpserver's code,
saw printstatus() was called from sigchild(), and stopped there without
looking further (it's also called prior to entering the main loop).  
That'll learn me for not checking tcpserver's behavior out empirically
as you did.  And you're right that I also picked on the wrong status
line as well.  *Sigh*  Back in my box (and bracing for the autoresponders).
