daemontools 0.70 in debian etch

Hello!

today I was installing daemontools 0.70 in box with a fresh install of
Debian etch; I added the line (note wrap)

 SV:123456:respawn:env -
 PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
 svscan /service </dev/null >/dev/console 2>/dev/console

to /etc/inittab and it complained in /var/log/syslog

 Jun 25 10:39:25 server init: /etc/inittab[72]: process field too long

I removed the 3 redirections and it worked ok

are the redirections really important in this case?
any clues to fix this?
