It's probably something like journald
(http://untroubled.org/journald/), which has been announced before on
this list (thanks for the pointer to the archive!).

It's certainly an interesting optimization to reduce the number of
necessary sync operations (and thus the disk seek overhead), at the
expense of a slightly longer open SMTP transaction.
