Slightly OT - sicas applet

Hello everyone.

So sicas is an applet and calls a cluster of J2EE
servers. A guy mentioned something similar using a
Flash application and called this way of working
"remoting".

A few questions about this setup:

1) What JVM does the client use/need? 

2) What does sicas use to communicate with the
servers? SOAP? a WebService?

3) Does the applet need special privileges to operate?
