Hi,

IMHO background images may also be achieved by using a JLabel which is 
in JDK1.4 a container too. That means you can use it as container 
instead of -- e.g. -- JPanel. By using XML like this, you should get a 
background image for the componentx and componenty.
<label icon="image">
   <componentx...>
   <componenty...>
</label>
