Fortune 500 companies are still largely dependent on their mainframes; this is why DR planning and testing is so vital. No mainframe = No company, pretty much. The one disaster it's impossible to recover from is withdrawal of software licenses; to this extent, IBM 'own' companies which depend on mainframes. Withdrawal of license is IBMs 'nuclear deterrent'. The 'other area' this came up in was moving workload offshore. I've heard it rumoured that, quite apart from the lower labour costs, it's entirely possible that some offshore outfits in places like India are, shall we say, perhaps less than rigorous about ensuring they have the correct licenses for everything they run. IBM are understandably unhappy about this, and are considering moving towards a 'piracy by proxy' policy - any large company which moves workload overseas, to a 3rd party which subsequently turns out not to be properly licensed, risks having *their own* mainframe licenses cancelled. 3rd-hand report of 4th-hand rumour, but that's something I've heard...
