Okay. Fine. Let's analyze your [flawed] line of reasoning then...

To learn about/how to use HERCULES?

Or to learn about/how to use S/390 operating systems/architecture? 

HercGUI allows one to more easily user HERCULES, so this so-called
"lofty goal" you speak of -- that would be the only reason for their
decision to use HercGUI without paying for it -- would be the goal of
"learning how to use HERCULES".

So right off the bat, your analogy is seriously flawed, Peter, and
does not actually match the reality of the situation as is actually
exists wrt to reason(s) of using IBM's software stack [without paying
for it and/or contrary to published licensing terms].

One can easily learn how to use Hercules without having to spend a
penny. Such is NOT possible however with IBM's modern day operating
systems. Therefore your analogy is flawed.

But please do go on.

Of course. But one should ask WHY they are. That is to say, WHY did
they choose to become software pirates? Why did they choose to steal
their copy of HercGUI?

Was it because they're unemployed and thus could not afford it? Or
maybe they were employed but felt the price was "too steep"?

In any case, their theft of HercGUI allows them to accomplish
something they could just as easily have accomplished *legally* FOR
FREE. Again, such is most definitely NOT the case with respect to
learning OS/390, etc.

With complete and utter disdain -- IF their reasons for having done
so were unjustified.

If the reason they chose to do so were justifiable however -- such as
would be the case if they were truly unemployed and poor -- then I
would hope they would be treated with compassion and understanding
just as I would treat them myself[1].

Boy you DO know how to lay the rhetoric on thick, don't you?

Once again, the users, if your analogy were fair, would not be asking
how to user HERCGUI (i.e. the "purloined software"), but rather they
would be asking about how to user HERCULES.

And in such a situation I would like to think that our user community
would be entirely willing to help them use Hercules AT THE SAME TIME
AS reminding them of their obligation to pay for the software they're
using.

And if SOME people felt so strongly about it as to refuse to help
them AT ALL [with their Hercules question], then so be it.

But the point is, the fact that they're admitting to using an
[*presumably*] unpaid for copy of HercGUI would be a matter between
ME and THEM, *NOT* between the Hercules community and them. It would
be MY responsibility to contact them and ask for payment, not the
responsibility of every Hercules user out there.

In a word, no. I would NEVER be so bold as to ask a friend to do
that. That's MY job, not theirs.

Now if they should decide completely on their own to "snitch" on
someone, that'd be THEIR personal business, not mine.

But if they *should* decide to "do such a thing for me" (presumably
because "they were my friend" and "wished to help me" (even though I
never asked for such help from them in the first place)), then I
would like to think they'd have the good sense to follow-up on such
issues  ***>>> O-F-F  L-I-S-T <<<*** and not bother the other
Hercules members with such NON-HERCULES issues.

[1] Incidentally, it has been my decision from day one[2] to offer

for *free* to anyone/everyone that can provide convincing evidence
that they are currently unemployed.

[2] For MANY YEARS actually. About as long as I've been unemployed
myself I guess.
