Oh come on guys - think for a minute. Peter's company has a vey good
product, and they make a good deal of money off it, partly (though
not primarily) because they went through a lot of expensive and
difficult procedures to obtain IBM's blessing.

And running OS/390 on that platform is NOT cheap by anyone's
standards, not in terms of real dollars. It certainly is less
expensive than running on current hardware with current DASD though.
It has it's place and it does a great job.

Hercules, on the other paw, has no blessings from IBM, enimity from
vendors of "competing" products (Peter aside :) and litteraly
thousands and thousands of users. In fact, there are probably more
Hercules installs running at any given second than there are physcial
hardware mainframes. Even more than the number of LPARS on those
Mainframes.

Hercules is just plain fun for certain types of people. :)

I've looked hard at a commercial application (using Linux/390) with
Hercules and with Flex. I still think it is a great idea, but the
amount of work involved is beyond my resources at this time.

So in the interest of ADVOCACY and not argument, what would be the
one 'killer' application we could use Hercules for that would help
its growth along, and at the same time, releive any
possible "competitive" pressure? Oh yes, and give IBM a reason to
come up with a hobbist license as well?

I have one suggestion at this time, and I don't know how well it
would work out.

A GAME.

A big, juicy, role playing, big universe, complex, turn taking, foot
stomping, rousing emluation of reality game. With the backend (i.e.
turn) processing happening under processing written to run under
Hercules. Under what, I am not all that certain. MVS???, VM???,
MUSIC???, WHATEVER???.

Put some minds together to pick a good (and possible!) implementation
set, write some web based stuff and a client interface, and batch up
the game turns, reports, logic, and all that jazz for processing once
or twice per day.

Sure there are other platforms you could do it on, but heck, the
point is to advocate Hercules - as well as deal with the points I
brought out a few paragraphs above.

Who would think of dedicating a mainframe to play games? :)

-Paul
