Yes there is. They have no right at all to tie
their software sales to their hardware sales.
That's what is explicitly illegal in Europe,
and it's supposedly illegal in Australia too.
The question of whether it should also be illegal
in America is one we can debate. Laws aren't set
in stone, after all. It's also ethically wrong
to engage in such predatory practices. Although
of course you can debate ethics too. I tend to
derive everything from basic principles of the
Golden Rule.
