-d specifies that Hercules is to be run in 'daemon' mode, wherein it runs
invisibly with no attached console.

So, you turn off daemon mode by rem'ing out the -d on hercules startup.

There's no race condition, as I've said. Its working as its supposed to.
Hercules, as noted, is NOT in control of shutdown.
