Thanks Mike, I've done that, set it to CONSOLE and used "start_herc". At the Hercules prompt, it won't ipl with "ipl 148". Attaching consoles with "telnet localhost 3270" or "x3270" with the same port does not work. The former bails out with "no 3215 console defined". My extcons.conf is like
 001F 3215 CONS
 # 001F 3215-C
 # 0009 3215 CONS
 # 0009 3215-C
 0010 3270 CONS
 # 0011 3270 CONS
