Tun/Tap device with recent versions of linux

I used tun/tap devices in the past with older versions of Linux to connect Hercules to outside world;   but I found out the tun-1.1 modules that I had used only works with older version of Linux kernel 2.2 and 2.4.

 

 Does anyone know if tun  kernel load modules is supported on more recent versions of Linux and how to use it with Hercules.
