Many moons ago, when I was about knee-hgh to a systems programmer, one of the first responsible tasks I was given was to migrate an S/360 system from OS/PCP release 14 to release 15. I asked our frendly neighborhood IBM SE whether he had any hints and tips that I should be aware of. He told me that since I was installing release 15, I should make sure to change every IEFBR14 reference to IEFBR15. I didn't do it, thank goodness - not because I was smart enough to know that it was nonsense, but because it looked like too much hassle to me and I decided to take a chance.

 

 The numbering conventions throw up interesting things now and again. When IBM introduced their first program product Sort/Merge (presumably in response to the market inroads that Syncsort was making) the code that they chose was ICE. The highest-level module was called MAN (meaning 'main'? Or maybe 'manager'). A note that came out from one of the Guide organisations was headed 'THE ICEMAN cometh' and was illustrated with a sort of snowman/yeti drawing.
