But until about 1980, the status of object code wasn't so obvious. Source code is a creative work by a person (or company), but object code is created by a compiler, and was thought not to be a creative work for a long time. I got a copy of the OS/360 source tapes around 1997, and then sent it to Sam Golub to be added to his tape distribution. The person I got it from asked IBM before sending it to me. I had PL/I (F) and library assembled and running on an AT/370 under VM/PC around 1997. It does run very slow, though. I suspect that the source code to MVS is copyrighted, but not the object code.
