Pretty much anything (ascii, binary, large, small) I try to send (FTP PUT) using the onboard LAN cable connection dies quickly.  If I use the Wi-Fi connection then it always works.  So why not use the Wi-Fi all the time?  Because I cannot ping public addresses, or even my router, from ISPF 6 if I do; whereas this works fine using the onboard LAN cable connection.
