I don't know how you could “have spent half of your life waiting to meet” me. I'm leading one Free Software organization. There's many. And there is the Free Software Foundation itself – is it them you wanted to talk to? They're easily reachable. Actually, the organization, which I'm representing, is pEp foundation. We want to fully support MVS programs. We're heading to supply the pEp mainframe adapter, meant to be used from PL/I and COBOL. Therefore, we're using Language Environment to make the linking possible. Because the Free Software stack mostly is in C we were experimenting how to implement this. It seems to be no problem. Our tests worked out well.
Then we started to port more free software to USS. We found a company named Rocket. They've got ported a list of projects already. But they don't give upstream. Their community support seems to be weak. So we started our own ports.
Quickly, we ended up with the people from the Perl project asking us for help. They've got no mainframe to port their software, too. So we provided them access to our VM, expecting to do this for other projects, too. In Free Software you always give upstream.
Now the IBM stopped us by billing us $9000 per month out of the blue. We'll pay this and shut down. It's too expensive for what we're doing. Looks like IBM Dallas ISV center cannot provide a solution. I will try to find an alternative.
Do you know any? We would need C and C++ with Language environment as well as either PL/I or COBOL (or both) to test.
