Well I have to agree with you in part at least.
Assembler Programmers - a "Dying breed" - Yes
"C" programmers = Dime a Dozen - Yes (90 percent are worth about as much)
Excluding present company and the other 10%

On the other Hand - well debugged assembler programs (from exprience ) work
forever.

I enoyed writing "C" - The 3270 Emulator I use was written in part by me in
"C"
And I have a previous 3270 emulator that worked on a DOS platform that was
completey written by me in "C" 6.
The way I wrote "C" it was almost assembler in any case.

Modern Object Oriented CODE - Personally I don't like. But it great for all
the housepainters.
I 'd consider myself more of a PCASSO of programing than a housepainter.

Like I said beforel - it's a matter of having your own "tool box" of
routines etc. and enough memory left to remember what they do.

Of course I am not writing all this code from scratch -
My toolbox has 40 years worth of routines and I am just cutting and pasting
to get them in the right order. (AND TRYING TO REMEMBER WHAT THEY ALL DO).

I'm pretty sure that most old timers work the same way -
If they don't have a tool box then they are not really pros.
Big difference between 1 year of experience twenty or thirty times and
thirty years of experience.

I have seen "C" programs that are more difficult to understand then well
written assembler. (not this program - writing too fast for it to be well
written -But eventually I will document it fully - It will be "art")

I remember the APL language.

We had a Joke
" it takes an experienced APL programmer two weeks to understand a ONE line
APL program written by an experienced APL programmer."

Bit of truth to that.
Experienced Assembler programmers understand asembler programs written by
Experienced Assembler programmers.

But "C" is fine - I never wrote it on the MF so I am a little apprehensive.
When I have a BUG in assembler I know its my BUG
A bug in "C" - I'm not sure.

And you're still not tempted to write any of
this in C?

While you personally are clearly very productive
in assembler, anyone else trying to debug a
problem or make minor improvements is going to
give up before they even start.

I see all assembler code on a dangerous road to
an orphanage. It's a dying art (a fact hidden
by the unusual nature of participants in these
Herc groups), while C programmers are
permanently available at a dime a dozen.
