I tried the edit and browse (using x3270 on ubuntu 10.04) and it skipped an extra 8 lines when paging using model 3278-2, but positioned correctly for 3278-3 or 3278-4.

I think what your building is a great idea. I've only just started using Hercules, and had forgotten Xedit and a full DIAG interface for fullscreen hadn't existed pre VM/SP. 

I definitely agree with using assembler to do the project, you're extending VM/370 which is written in it, and writing for an architecture with tight address limits. (And I like Assembler!)
