sixpack 1.2 tape configuration

Within the "SixPack.conf" file I found tape definitions with an asterisk (0xxx 3420 *) instead of a Windows/UNIX file id. What does the asterisk mean ? May I dynamically define/attach a PC file to the device ? If so how to do ?
