AFAIK asterisk just means "empty"

You attach a tape with the Hercules "devinit" command

devinit 480 c:\hercules\tape\mytape

 ***   you can use the shorter form of

devinit 480 tape\mytape

.. assuming the current directory is  c:\hercules.

.. You can find out the current directory from hercules console  using
the "cd" command

.. If you put DIAG8CMD  ENABLE in your config file you can issue
hercules commands from within CMS using the CP  HCP command :

HCP devlist
HCP devlist e
HCP devinit e prt\p1
HPC devinit 480 tape\mytape

etc
