Quick status report:

I gave up on DIRMAINT.

I am *firmly* in J. D. Cassidy's camp on this issue: it's more trouble than
it's worth.

I added my new user, but when I went to link to its 191 mdisk (to create it=
s
profile exec, etc) I got an error about it overlapping the spool area. I
double checked my values and they at first looked okay, but then I decided
to check them via ICKDSF LIST, and sure enough CP was right! SPOL (spool)
space was defined immediately following the last user's mdisk allocation.
(Thank goodness the system was kind enough to not do what I actually told i=
t
to do and prevented me from shooting myself in the foot! Whew! Close one.)

The MDISK was quickly fixed and I was then able to format my new user's
minidisk and create its profile exec/xedit, etc.

I then decided to tackle the "HCPDMQ953E CP is unable to allocate system
DASD dump space" error that comes up during IPL.

I first tried creating a 530PAG and 530SPL volumes (16GB each since my
system was defined with 6GB and I wanted be sure I had enough of each), but
CP never "owned" them. That's where I'm at now. I think I need to update th=
e
SYSTEM CONFIG on MAINT's CF1 disk but am not sure. Does anyone know? If not=
,
no big deal; I'll try it myself tomorrow.

It's late, I'm tired, and it's cold and snowing here in Seattle (2 inches
(5cm) so far!(*)) and time to go to bed.

I'll pick up again tomorrow.

This is actually quite fun re-learning what I've forgotten over the years a=
s
well as learning the new stuff on the latest VM! :))

(p.s. thanks to Peter Coghlan for his DIRM GET/ADD suggestion (even though
it didn't help), Dave Jones for his "Getting Started with Linux on System z
(SC24-6096-03)" suggestion, even though it didn't help (it was chapter 7 by
the way Dave, not section 4) and of course J. D. Cassidy for having the goo=
d
sense to suggest forgetting about DIRMAINT and doing it the old-fashioned
DIRECTXA way. :) (apologies if I missed anyone)

(*) We don't usually get much snow in Seattle, WA. Maybe only on 1-6 days
out of the entire winter season we'll get snow, and it's usually only 1/2 t=
o
1 inch and it's gone in a day or so. (Two years ago we got over 9 inches(!)
that lasted 2-3 weeks or so! That was something!) (I grew up in Pennsylvani=
a
and we usually got a LOT of snow each winter, but in Seattle, WA it's
somewhat rare. Usually it's just cold and rainy. Always rain. Lots of rain.
People don't tan here in the summer, they rust! :)
