On my systems this is done by commenting out the DisplayManager.requestPort line in /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config like this: !DisplayManager.requestPort: 0 Then restart xdm. Of course, this assumes that you use xdm to manage X logins. You may be using gdm or KDE's equivalent (kdm?). The problem may also manifest itself when using ssh, but I haven't tested that. Using ssh would clearly be the way to go over an untrusted network, but over the LAN we simply use XDMCP.
