Do I need to mount the tape after varying it online?

I tried :

M 580,vol=(SL,TAPE),use=private

and it accepted it.     Is that the right syntax (took it from MVS console).

Have tried

R,xx,'580'
R,xx,'0580'
R,xx,580
R,xx,0580

argh ... what does it want ????????????    :)
