I have=A0finally got round to giving=A0the Turnkey 3 Update Beta=A0 a go an=
d=20
have=A0achieved some=A0success, particularly in=A0that I now have a viable =
JES3=20
installation.=A0=A0I fed back my experiences to Carlos and he has asked me =
to share=20
them with the group.
I was=A0a standard=A0Turnkey 3=A0system, built from the starter system usin=
g the=20
sysgen instructions on the CD.=A0 The machine I am running on is a Toshiba =
i686=20
laptop with Nvidia graphics running Debian Squeeze (all packages up to date=
as=20
of Saturday).=A0 My Hercules is 3.07 as packaged for Debian.=A0 I had added=
extra=20
printers, readers, terminals, tapes drives and lots of DASD to the Turnkey=
=20
3=A0system and had the number of CPUs set to 2, but the sysgen was standard=
(as I=20
have not yet managed to find instructions for rerunning the sysgen for=A0an=
=20
existing system).=A0 Everything worked reasonably well, although I had not =
got=20
startrek to work under TSO, it just told me it didn't exist!
Once I had loaded the updates (just unzip the downloaded archive into the=20
directory containing conf, dasd, etc.), I IPL'd the emulator and (after=20
some=A0very scary=A0messages during the initial JES2 startup and=20
subsequent=A0failure!) managed to do a cold start of JES2 and all looked=20
reasonably good.=A0 One point I did note was that CMD1 abends S106 on every=
=20
startup.=A0 I then tried amending the config to include NUMCPU=3D2 and cons=
istently=20
had a problem with a processor spin being detected on the second CPU.=A0 Th=
is=20
happened occasionally with the original Turnkey 3 installation, but now hap=
pens=20
consistently.=A0 I have fallen back to a single CPU and that seems to be fi=
ne.
When I originally tried to start JES3 (IPL and then r 00, sysp=3Dj3), I had=
=A0a=20
problem as it was complaining that it didn't have a console on device 0009 =
(it=20
has been moved to 001F).=A0 It was also complaining about a missing printer=
at=20
030F and a missing console on 00C6.=A0 I added these by duplicating the tel=
net=20
definition on 001F for 0009, duplicating the printer on 030E (with a differ=
ent=20
file name) for 030F and adding a 3270 device on 00C6.=A0 All terminals are=
=20
connected before IPL, that is telnet x 2 for devices 0009 and 001F and X327=
0 x 6=20
for devices 0010, 0011, 00C0, 00C1, 00C2 and 00C6.=A0=A0Once I had done thi=
s, JES3=20
started with no problems.
<WARNING> (and off-topic, but I nearly gave=A0myself=A0a nervous breakdown =
because=20
of this, so if it saves some other poor soul some heartache...)=A0The Debia=
n=20
packaged version of x3270=A0may be=A0broken.=A0 I can't find any references=
to it on=20
the Internet, but any attempt to connect to Hercules using it on my system=
=20
results in a 'Connection Refused' message.=A0 I had to compile my own versi=
on=20
of=A0x3270 and required libraries to make it work!=A0 I did not change any =
of the=20
build options from their defaults, just ./configure; make, and off it goes.=
=A0 If=20
anyone knows anything about this, I would be grateful if they can let me kn=
ow as=20
the standard package keeps coming along and overwriting my working, hand ro=
lled=20
one and I would much rather use a standard package anyway as it is then som=
eone=20
else's responsibility!</WARNING>
Once I had this up and running, I tried logging in to TSO, which worked, bu=
t I=20
got a couple of abend messages during statup and my brief testing (the othe=
r=20
half was nagging me to stop playing with my toys=A0as we had important stuf=
f to=20
do!) showed that although TSO was functional, there are problems with it.=
=A0=20
Startrek couldn't find a couple of files (although it didn't run at all in =
the=20
original, so it was a step in the right direction), but more worryingly RPF=
=20
would not run.
For me at least, this is all a step in the right direction, I have a usable=
=20
JES3.=A0 I will continue to look at it and see if I can sort out any of the=
=20
problems, but if anyone has any ideas I would be grateful.
One small point=A0I feel I need to make is that I have=A0seen in a number o=
f places=20
people claiming that=A0'*' and '8' are=A0interchangeable as command prefixe=
s in=20
JES3.=A0=A0They are NOT. it is just that the difference doesn't matter in a=
single=20
main jesplex.=A0 '*' prefixes a global command, to be sent to all mains in =
the=20
jesplex and '8' prefixes a local command that is processed by the local mai=
n=20
only.=A0 Not wishing to be pedantic, but I am hoping one day to get into th=
e=20
position where this DOES matter to me and hopefully others as well!
Lastly, could=A0anyone tell me where I can find the system definitions used=
in the=20
sysgen for the Turnkey 3 update.=A0=A0As=A0detailed above, I=A0have a numbe=
r=20
of=A0non-standard devices defined to my old Turnkey system and need to find=
=20
sensible device addresses=A0for them on the updated system.=A0 Without the =
sysgen=20
details, I don't know what device addresses have been defined as what devic=
es.
