Sure once you actually get to the Linux initialization stage things go a bit faster now than in the past, but that's not where you spend time. Most of the time is spent in the BIOS: * testing the memory (or whatever) * initializing the SCSI subsystem * waiting for disks to spin up * doing god knows what else, probably sleep(60) Even once in Linux it sometimes takes a while if the internet connection is slow to come up, or if you are using ext2 and your 20-boot fsck has come up. Furthermore, for me the real pain of rebooting is to have to close all my applications (30+ windows) and loose all the context. This is why I never reboot my computer.
