Well,  I *was* just being facetious, but....

I do not believe in murder, but I am willing to kill in self-defense, or 
even in defense of others.  I do not believe that makes me hypocritical. 
 I do not see much difference between the two situations, other than 
severity and drama.  Copyright is a sword which may be used to kill 
itself.  That is what the GPL attempts to do.  The fact that it must use 
the same copyright laws it is trying to defeat is ironic, not hypocritcal.
