Your version of CVS is buggy ;) Running with -z0 may help the situation 
or reverting back to a version of CVS that does work. I use debian 
unstable and CVS version 1.12.1 has never experienced any of those types 
of problems. However, it could be that the anonymous CVS server (the 
backup one) runs a different version of the CVS server but -z0 is 
probably good enough.

BTW, that was the last file so you would have gotten everything.
