Indeed I use gcc 2.95.
 - I can't upgrade to 3.x because it requires a recent glibc
 - I won't upgrade to 3.x because it's slower, and usually doesn't generate
   significantly faster code, not to mention its bugs we have encountered
   while developing MPlayer

I hope you'll be able to pinpoint the reason of the failure. I'm willing to
test it anytime.
