Heimdal's use of openssl: EC

The openssl shipped with RHEL/CentOS6 seems to have the EC ripped out.

The result is that heimdal does revert to its own crypto library.

Question: Should heimdal NOT use openssl when EC is ripped out but
installed or should heimdal use the parts of openssl that are
installed (without the EC parts). 

Does heimdal need the EC parts to function?

Is this already configurable or should it be?
