Ah. I had a look and there's a note in the feed:

Windows-x86 binary.
       That's because 0compile depends on it and old versions of
0install don't understand
       Windows-only dependencies and might therefore insist on
downloading a version (if
       the <package-implementation> above doesn't find anything). It's
better to download it
       and ignore it than to fail to run 0compile.

That's not much use for running it directly. I've modified it to use
the if-0install-version attribute to avoid the hack on modern systems.

Where is bash on OS X? /bin/bash? Could we provide a binary here?

Any idea why it's using version 1.0? What does this say?

0install select --version 1.4 http://0install.net/2006/interfaces/0compile.xml
