Thanks for the details, Martin.  I guess I meant in configure scripts.

Ok, I do the same thing as you.  I just pick something (in my case a
function call) that I know only exists in the required version.

The 0.8.0 versus 0.7.99 doesn't affect us in the configure scripts
currently, it sounds like.  So it only matters in RPM's?

I would vote for pkg-config.  This seems to be the easiest-to-use of the
libraries I've dealt with.
