I don't know the first thing about pkgconfig, and in my case it's 
in /usr/lib/pkgconfig.

However, the output above is strange.  I have a "libxml++-1.0.pc" not 
a "libxml++-1.0".  Try symlinking libxml++-1.0.pc -> libxml++-1.0
