You do have a dilemma, and I'm afraid I don't have a good answer.

Option 1: revert to a pre-archive file and re-enter transactions. 
This would presumably be a huge amount of work, since you did the 
archive several months ago.

Option 2: revert to a pre-archive file, but try copying the more 
recent transactions manually, manipulating the files in a text 
editor. The current MD files are pure text, so this is possible. 
However, I don't know what else might get messed up if you just paste 
in lines. It might be as easy as adjusting balances, or it might be a 
lot harder, and naturally this is not a supported procedure.

Option 3: Forget about the old transactions. Reconcile the accounts 
and adjust the beginning balances to match.

Option 4: Like option 3, but enter balance adjustment transactions 
instead of adjusting the beginning balances.

Option 5: Delete the transactions before your cutoff date, then 
reconcile the accounts and adjust the beginning balances to match. 
(This is probably what the archive action was supposed to do.)

Option 6: Die. Now. Let your executor figure it out. However, I 
believe some complications might arise from that approach also.
