MD has completely trashed all my data

I have a registered copy of MD. About a month ago I bought a new 
computer and installed the MD file from my old machine on the new one. 
However, I failed to immediately register the new copy of MD.

Today I noticed that many of the totals were incorrect and proceeded to 
register the new copy.  But that has not fixed the problem.

Is this known - that using your MD file on an unregistered copy will 
trash the data?
