I haven't been following the previous discussion, but in general this statement is correct. Connection sharing creates another level of NAT, and each such level is a new private network. This is not essential, but it's the way it works on Windows and probably Mac too. There would be additional security and performance issues to address if it weren't. Technically the laptop is acting as a router rather than a switch. A switch is a pass-through device which would enable the wireless device to be part of the same network. But a switch is subject to much more stringent timing requirements than a router, and a software implementation such as used in connection sharing generally can't meet those requirements. The usual solution nowadays is to replace the wired-only router with a wireless router. AFAIK all wireless routers -- certainly most -- have wired (Ethernet 100BaseT) ports as well. With prices easily under $40, connection sharing is only worth the effort when that isn't an option for other reasons.
