Emacs Font Issues

Hi -

I've been using the fd.o xserver for about 6 months (i think), and it's
really great. But I've noticed two big problems that I have no idea how
to fix:

- Emacs (GUI) uses fonts 2-3 times larger than under XFree86
On 1024x768, I can fit maybe 60 characters across my screen
compared to maybe 120 or so on XFree86. Fonts done by
gnome / kde work perfectly for me (even subpixel stuff)

- Mathematica fonts are rendered horribly - it's almost as if
whatever renders the fonts is cutting out massive amounts
of pixels. I'm sure that this isn't subpixel aa messups
(I've changed all of those settings around, and nothing changes)

I've attached screenshots of small regions under each server.

As both problems are similar (zoomed fonts?), I was wondering if fd.o
has some special font-rendering changes that deals with scaling of fonts
to a different default resolution than what XFree86 does.

If anyone has any ideas about where the problem could be, I'm more than
willing to do the coding / figure out better defaults in order to fix
it. This weird behavior is forcing me to run 2 xservers simultaneously -
one (Xfree86) for emacs / mathematica, one (fd.o) for gnome.

Thanks,

Matt Jones
