howto linux

hey all i need a program that loads advmenu and truns off the pc when u
exit.
I Had done this  ./arcade &   "put this in the boot init.d's"

advmame
init 0

but if theres an error. eg "can't load svgalib" the pc would just trun off.
dose any one
know how to

advmame
if error then exit
else init 0

thanks alot of the help
